Job Description

Intel's Components Research (CR) delivers innovative device technologies and architectures to enable Intel's roadmap. Our job is to invent, to demonstrate, and to develop game-changing and revolutionary technologies to enable Intel's technology leadership.

We're looking for a quantum device research engineer to join our team as we design quantum processors based on silicon quantum dot spin qubits. A successful candidate will develop and improve models of gate-defined quantum dot qubits in silicon and participate in data-driven decision making between competing designs. Models include dot and sensor electrostatics, quantum dot spectra, spin dynamics and exchange, noise and control signals, and quantum gate fidelity estimation. Candidates must have experience understanding and modeling solid state quantum devices and be familiar with the practical limitations of quantum control and measurement.

This position requires efficient communication and daily collaboration with other researchers and engineers to understand design success criteria and validate models with experimental data. Quantitative understanding of the impact of design choices and shaping expectations for experimental results is a key expectation for this role. Design choices include physical layout and dimensions, qubit control approaches, and measurement techniques. This position includes use of internal Intel tools as well as industry standard TCAD and modeling software.

Responsibilities are the following:

  • Independently propose and follow-through on unique, enabling ideas with potential to accelerate Intel's QC program.
  • Model and simulate semiconductor processes and devices to support design efforts for scaled quantum dot qubit arrays.
  • Model and simulate quantum dot qubits to support test and characterization teams.
  • Protect Intel's IP and onboard proven concepts and ideas.

This position includes collaboration with external research groups and vendor programs.

Behavioral traits we look for and required for this position:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly-motivated, and excited by self-directed work.
  • Creativity and flexibility to thrive under changing priorities.
  • Strong teamwork skills.

Qualifications

You must possess the below requirements to be initially considered for this position.

Preferred qualifications are in addition to the requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates.

Knowledge and/or experience listed below would be obtained through a combination of your schoolwork and/or classes and/or research and/or relevant previous job and/or internship experiences.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Quantum Engineering
  • 1st author publications
  • Understanding of spin qubits, spin transistors, quantum dots, and/or CMOS devices at low temperature.
  • Familiarity with qubit control and measurement theory.
  • 2-4 years+ of experience in semiconductor device modeling, solid state qubit design, or modeling in support of quantum computing research.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with 2D/3D quantum device simulations using TCAD software such as Sentaurus.
  • Experience with quantum dot or dopant qubit band structure calculations using effective mass theory or tight binding simulations.
  • Experience with spin Hamiltonian simulations including exchange, driving, and noise/damping terms.
  • Experience with low-dimensional transport calculations such as Hall effect.
