Sensing System Lab Intern

Job Description

The Sensing Systems Lab in Intel Labs is investigating the future of sensing and analytics in edge systems in IoT applications, and seeks a motivated intern to research sensor systems, algorithms and prototypes.


The candidate will be part of a team researching novel sensing systems and edge analytics issues such as:

  • Algorithms for real-time anomaly/outlier detection using unsupervised methods.
  • Tradeoffs between edge compute and backend compute in sensing systems.
  • Low-power implementations of deep learning models for learning at the edge.
  • Efficient data compression schemes.
  • Novel optical communication schemes or RF based sensing systems.

The ideal candidate should exhibit the following behavioral traits:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrates creativity in problem solving.

The right candidate will have a background in sensor systems and signal processing and qualities that include some or all of the following:

-Familiarity with sensors spanning vision camera, LiDAR, Radar etc., acoustics ultrasound, motion accelerometers, gyroscopes etc., and actuators servos..etc

-Experience with machine learning, deep learning models, multivariate time-series analysis.

-Familiarity with algorithm development and signal processing. Including high speed signal processing, and testing.

-Familiarity with microcontrollers and programming.

The intern position is intended for FY2018 and will be located in Santa Clara, CA and requires interaction with co-researchers located in Hillsboro, OR. This is an entry level position and will be compensated accordingly.


You must possess the minimum qualifications to be initially considered for this position. Preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates. Relevant experience can be obtained through school work, classes and project work, internships, military training, and/ or work experience. Minimum Requirements: Must be pursuing a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent. Minimum 6 months of experience in/with the following: . Python or C/C++ or MATLAB. Building prototypes using off the shelf components, programming, testing and troubleshooting. Machine learning, algorithm development, benchmarking and evaluation. Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with unsupervised learning, probabilistic methods, FPGAs, Radar HW and RF based sensors.
