Acoustic Echo Reduction
Mobile terminals are very likely to be used in very different and adverse conditions such as hands free mode or noisy environments. Facing the numerous perturbations reducing speech quality, several speech enhancement solutions are nowadays implemented in terminals in order to assure best-in-class communication experience in any condition.
Among such solution, Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC) refers to a general class of signal processing algorithms designed to identify and eliminate the sound of a loudspeaker within a background of various other sources. The main application of an AEC in the context of this project is the echo cancellation in communication where it is desired to prevent the retransmission of any sound coming from the loudspeaker back to the far-end talker during a call.
Many challenges are linked to a proper design of echo reduction system. Solution beyond state of the art are foreseen for instance in following direction : get a proper modeling of echo signal in non-linear environment as small loudspeaker in mobile terminal are far from being linear, reducing echo at an inaudible level while keeping the local speaker signal as natural as possible.
The aim of this project is to investigate and design practical methods to ease robust Acoustic Echo Cancellation. Several innovation options will be investigated and benchmarked versus state of the art solution during the project. Performance evaluations will be based on recorded mobile phone signals and will require the student to record and do experiments in a lab setting.
-Last year student in engineering school or Master degree (in Electronic, Telecommunications)
-Good background in signal processing
-Good understanding of speech and audio enhancement
-Programming: Matlab, C, C fixed-point and DSP programming is a plus
- Good communication skills required
-Fluent in English
