Function-as-a-Service is a new architectural pattern for event-driven systems that is gaining rapid momentum for highly elastic, cloud-based dispatch of microservices as triggered, just-in-time execution of needed operations. In its introductory generation, this pattern helps cloud service providers maximize beneficial utilization of their infrastructure, while it gives their clients the flexibility of using dynamically and transparently summoned infrastructure towards their goals --while avoiding all of the costs and complexity of creating and maintaining it. In this emergent high velocity trend, the proposed internship will focus on characterizing FaaS workloads and infrastructure usage patterns with at least the following three objectives: 1 Evaluate typical usage models with current architectures - from performance, cost, and agility standpoints, 2 Identify areas for optimization with the goal of higher platform utilization and lower Total Cost of Ownership, 3 Identify or develop key micro-workloads that can produce repeatable and representative guidance for right-sizing the compute-network-storage balances in upcoming product generations and for shaping future architecture definitions.
