Mechanical/ Opto-mechanical design engineer

Job Description


Qualifications

Mechanical Engineers research, design, and develop mechanical and electromechanical devices or systems. Responsibilities include development of system concepts, conducting design previews, performing system acceptance, and resolving design and implementation issues. Responds to customer/client requests or events as they occur. Develops solutions to problems utilizing formal education and judgement. Responsibilities:
Lead projects in optical connectivity, including but not limited to single fiber and multi fiber connectors, physical contact and lensed connectors
Designs and builds proof-of-concept prototypes as needed of precision optical systems
Works in close collaboration with optical design engineer
Engages with external vendors and generates mechanical design specifications for them
Explains and documents design decisions, tradeoffs and analysis to team and management

Qualifications:
BS in, Physics, Applied Optics, Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field. or equivalent and 4+ years of design and hands-on experience developing opto-mechanical systems. MS or Ph.D preferred.
Demonstrated ability to create new designs from scratch
Experience using Solidworks and 3D printers for prototyping designs
Experience with optical mechanical assembly
Experience designing with tight tolerance requirements
Ability to work independently, without any help
Knowledge of opto-mechanical design principles
Basic knowledge of optical principles
Knowledge of machining and optical manufacturing processes
Strong understanding of precision fabrication technologies and precision metrology measurement
Familiar with semiconductor packaging and assembly processes such as pick and place machines
Understanding of insertion loss tolerance in optical connectors

Additional Desired Qualifications:
Some experience with optical design tools like Zemax is a plus
Knowledge of material science corrosion, composites, surface coating and conversion
Ability to thrive in a multi-disciplinary team environment
Embrace diversity in a cross culture global organization
Ability to balance near term and long term priorities
